No Men Are Foreign Thinking about the Poem
Q1 (i) “Beneath all uniforms …” What uniforms do you think the poet is speaking about?
Answer: The poet is speaking about the military uniforms worn by soldiers of different countries. These uniforms make them look different, but beneath them, they are all human beings, breathing the same way as we do.
Q1 (ii) How does the poet suggest that all people on earth are the same?
Answer: The poet suggests that all people are the same because they breathe the same air, walk on the same land, are nourished by the same sun, air, and water, share similar human emotions like love, and eventually return to the same earth after death.
Q2 In stanza 1, find five ways in which we all are alike. Pick out the words.
Answer: The five ways in which we all are alike are:
- No men are strange (all are humans, none are outsiders)
- No countries foreign (all nations are equal)
- A single body breathes (all have the same body functions)
- The land our brothers walk upon (all walk on the same earth)
- In which we all shall lie (all return to the same earth after death)
Q3 How many common features can you find in stanza 2? Pick out the words.
Answer: The common features in stanza 2 are Sun, Air, Water, Harvests, and Hands (labour). These show that all people depend on the same natural resources and perform the same kind of work.
Q4 “…whenever we are told to hate our brothers…” When do you think this happens? Why? Who ‘tells’ us? Should we do as we are told at such times? What does the poet say?
Answer: This happens during wars or conflicts when political leaders, rulers, or governments spread hatred for people of other nations. They tell us that others are our enemies.
No, we should not do as we are told at such times because hatred and war only harm humanity as a whole.
The poet says that by hating or fighting others, we actually betray ourselves and pollute our own earth. Instead, we should remember that all men are brothers and no country is foreign.
